Jermaine Beckford smashed home a hat-trick as Leeds cruised into the second round of the FA Cup at Northampton's expense - making it a dream Second Round tie for non league Histon.

Gary McAllister's men romped to a 5-2 victory at Sixfields with Jonny Howson and Ben Parker also on target for the Elland Road men for whom Malcolm Christie made his first appearance for 18 months after signing non-contract terms with Leeds.

"It was great for myself being out of the game for the past 18 months to come into a game like that was fantastic for me and for the team," said Christie.

"The manager's been great with me. The physios have got me fit, he's given me a non-contract to try and earn a contract and that's what I'm trying to do at the moment."

McAllister praised the contribution of the former Middlesbrough and Derby striker, saying: "I'm fortunate that I've got a big squad and we've used it well . The guys who came in were excellent. Malcolm's been with us for a while. We gave him the facilities to recuperate and get himself back to full fitness.

"I've seen enough seen enough in the last two or three weeks when he's played some behind-closed-doors matches that he warrants a contract because it's not long ago that Middlesbrough were prepared to pay almost £7 million for him."

International

Switching to the international scene and Jack Collison is hoping to transfer his club form to the national side as Wales face a daunting friendly in Copenhagen.

The 19-year-old has been given his head by Gianfranco Zola and scored his first goal for West Ham and is hoping to grab his opportunity with Wales along with another star of the Under 21s, Aaron Ramsey.

He said: "I have had a brilliant couple of weeks with West Ham. I have been given my opportunity in the first team and scored my first goal in the Premier League. Now I am also getting a chance with Wales, and seeing Aaron also being called in is brilliant for both of us.

"He is an outstanding player and great to play alongside. We have worked well together in the Under 21s and now we seem to be getting the chance to establish a partnership in the senior side, which we both hope will last for a long time."
