Player Management

Gordon Taylor
The PFA has represented professional footballers since its formation in 1907. Almost a century of experience has enabled us to know exactly what players require, and more importantly, how to achieve it. Armed with this knowledge the PFA has its own internal football agency department, the Player Management Agency (PMA) to continue and develop its role of player representation. The Agency provides hands-on representation for players at every stage of their careers as well as offering ethical “best advice” at all times. It is only right and proper that a player seeks advice and representation in contractual negotiations with a club, and the quality of that advice and representation is crucial. The sole aim of all our agents will always be the best interests of the player.

Regulations introduced by FIFA require players and clubs to deal only with licensed agents for transfer and contract negotiations. The PFA has nine designated officers whom are licensed FIFA players agents and are able to advise and represent players on all aspects of their contracts at the time of re-signing or when being transferred.

We feel that our advice is second to none. In an industry where a player’s life can change in a short space of time from being a youth player to a professional player with a lucrative contract, sound financial advice is essential. We are delighted that many of our members throughout the Premier League and the Football League have become clients of the PFA and thus have ensured that their futures are secure.

The Player Management Agency will at all times ensure that your best interests are looked after and that your career has an opportunity to flourish and go from strength to strength.

Player Management Agency

The PFA recognise that the management of players requires particular attention to detail. A player’s career is short and it is important to maximise all potential opportunities outside the game, as well as inside it. The PFA is focused on addressing the issue of top quality and fair player representation. All current PFA members have the opportunity to sign with the Management Agency and let their union look after all their interests.

The Management Agency has qualified staff that have played the game at the highest level and are well aware of the problems and pitfalls a professional footballer can face. In Gordon Taylor (Chief Executive) and Mick McGuire (Deputy Chief Executive), the PFA have leading representatives who have negotiated at the highest level and have made a major impact on the working conditions and benefits for all players.

Football Club Contractual Negotiations

We negotiate contracts for players playing at all levels of football including International, Premier League and Football League. Players will have differing requirements as the various stages of their careers to what they are seeking in a contract and we will protect all their interests. We ensure that all aspects of a player’s contract are watertight and any agreement reflects what was negotiated.

Transfers

Club to club transfers can play an important part of professional footballer’s career and therefore they must be conducted in a professional manner. The PMA staff have the expertise and experience to conduct transfer negotiations effectively and make sure that the client’s interests are protected and remain the important consideration for in any move.

Loan Agreements

With the permission of a players football club the PMA can source loan moves to help players fulfil their potential and gain playing experience. A loan move can be productive in many ways whether it be an opportunity for a younger player from a Premier League to gain experience or to help a player who is lacking opportunities at his current club gain playing time. The PMA will help make any loan move as smooth as possible as it may involve relocation for a period of time.

Service

A major benefit to any client of the PMA is that the majority of services that a player requires are provided internally and not out-sourced to other companies. The PFA has many facets including PFA Enterprises, a commercial department with offices in Manchester and London. For the investment and financial provision for players there is PFA Wealth Management, based in Birmingham and strengthened by its recent partnership with Butlers Wharf; a leading financial organisation. For the areas of a players career that require more specific attention the PFA now has twenty-three Business Partnerships which help cater to all a players needs.

Every client will be allocated a primary FIFA Licensed Agent along with a player liaison member of staff who work together meeting the day-to-day areas of a player’s career. The PMA team will provide assistance of every aspect of a footballer’s career, letting the player concentrate playing. PMA staff will attend a player’s matches; source football and equipment supply and provide media, education and coaching training and provision.

Professional Players

The PFA as the player’s union represents, protects and serves all professional players in so many different ways through their playing days and after they have retired from the game. The PFA’s services are open to all members but the PMA increases the day-to-day service of a player’s career management. The Agency has the structure and resources to accommodate players signing their first professional contract to a player who is seeking other secondary vocation paths after they have retired.

Youth

Younger elite players receive much attention with people offering them advice and services at a young age and it can be difficult for a player, his parents and family to be able to make the right decisions with so little guidance or information on player representation. The mealy that can surround the race for a youngster’s signature can cause the player to lose focus on what is important; the player’s football development. The PMA has assisted many young talented players through the early stages as they have gone on to have long and successful playing careers.

The PFA’s Player Management Agency will ensure that young players entering the professional game have access to contractual advice and also professional guidance in relation to media training, commercial opportunities, financial planning and education.

Summary

The PFA offers all 4,000 of its members an excellent service and the progress and growth of our Management Agency is further confirmation of the ongoing development of the Association to continue to meet the needs of the present day professionals. The Professional Footballers’ Association Player Management Agency has the structure, resources, knowledge and experience to meet the needs of any professional player in the game today. The staff at the PFA negotiates with football clubs on daily basis to protect and serve the interests all professional players and the PMA is an extension of that premise. All the clients that the PMA represents will receive quality, ethical advice that is second to none.
